Based on Rebecca Feldman’s 2002 musical “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E” and written by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a comedic musical hit. It originated as an improv show, but with music and lyrics by William Finn, the show premiered on Broadway in 2005, and ran for three years before closing in January of 2008 after winning two Tony awards and performing 1,136 times.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features the stories of several young students with a passion for spelling, and possibly some childhood trauma. It follows the spellers as they interact, forming bonds and witnessing each other’s strange approaches to spelling. Things get a little messy at times as each individual character, or at least most of them, vie for their chance to win even if they are unable to pay the entry fee, or puberty hits at an inopportune moment. Whether you’re easily distracted, homeschooled, politically aware, or stressed out, like many of our beloved spellers, you’re sure to enjoy this renowned musical comedy! Come join us this April 4-6 for HTC’s production of Spelling Bee!
